Not sure if you are in touch with the owner, or close to the engine, but…. That plate on the valve cover towards the transmission would tell you…

I have already asked him to lightly clean the dirt/grime/oil off the plate, and he said he could not clean up enough to take a photo
Maybe it needs something stronger like brake cleaner or something ??

No need to see the plate. It is a 440 for sure. It has the RB platform in front of the valley pan. The engine number will be on there also. :)

That also looks like a Thermoquad so I agree 440 as I dont think they ever fitted a Thermoquad to the 383.

That's also on the 383 Mike also with the engine number on it, but I believe it's a 440 too just because of the Thermoquad as Steve Says..but I do have a Thermoquad fitted to my 383..but done by myself obviously :P

Not true my friend. What I am referring to is the raised up part of the block that appears in this picture just below the distributor hold down clamp. The 383 is a 'B' block and the 440 is a 'RB block and has that rectangular raised up area on the block with the engine numbers on it. The 383 does not have this raised up area on the block. :)

Yes, you are correct Mike  , the 383 does have the raised block too with the engine number on, but, it is slightly over more under where the AC bracket is, I have never looked and compared them both untill just now when you said it and there is a difference in where the raised pad is on both..Another school day for me and many thanks to you for that Mike

Also the lug on the gearbox bell housing for kickdown linkage with the bellcrank is missing, the 440s had a one piece kickdown rod so didn't need it.
I hope it's not been sat too long in that field.
